Unexpectedly yesterday we discussed the suicide rates in Lithuania.
When I was studying suicide in Youth Psychological Aid Center in 2001, the data of 1994 indicated that Hungary is the country with the biggest suicide rate in Europe.
However, the 1998 data indicate that Lithuania together with Russia, Latvia, Estonia, Belarus & Hungary are the leading countries in Europe for the MALE SUICIDE RATE.
Really sad & frightening news!!!
All the bigness & terror of the phenomenon makes people ask the questions: so what is the reason that (s)he made a suicide?
The common reasons that common people explain or understand are the separation with the girlfriend/boyfriend, the death of a close person, the loss of a job & so on.
The common mistake that people without knowledge make is to focus on 1 particular reason.
The mentioned issues can only be a sequence of events, the last drops, but not the cause.
Just think now: many people lose their jobs, boyfriends/girlfriends, have big disappointments in life, still they don't make suicide.
Once again I urge you to think systematically as the problem of suicide is broader than that.
What I have learned is that the thoughts and attempts to make a suicide
develop through a long time:
it is not today's decision done tomorrow.
Suicide is always accompanied with depression.
Now people use word "depression" to refer to the big disappointments, but
the word "depression" means clinical & serious disease.
Yesterday when I was prompted to discuss about suicide, I understood
the real reason and cause of the suicide.
IT IS DEPRESSION.
Let me explain how it works. Depression among the symptoms as the constant "down" mood & disappointment, has a mechanism of shaping one-sided, black view of the world.
The mechanism is simple: it is based on the memory and attention processes.
The thing is that memory selects bad events to remember and good ones to forget & attention is focused on the bad things as well.
Thus, even if good things happen (and good things do happen) to the person, he is not able to see them and appreciate them
because of unconscious memory and focus selection.
In conclusion, his bad mood even gets worse because his cognitive processes (his mind) only approve his previous thoughts that 'THERE IS NOTHING GOOD IN THIS WORLD & THERE IS NO SENSE IN LIVING".
Thus, it can be referred to the darkness falling on you in the spiritual reality. During the depression darkness falls and stays with you. This is how I see it.
I, the one who had depression long time ago in my early teenage
and who was healed by God,
I who had thoughts of suicide and wanted to commit it once
and I who studied both: the suicide & depression during psychology studies
and work in Youth Psychological Aid Center.
That should be sufficient support for my expertise in the field :)
In conclusion, I understand that the enemy we should be fighting with is depression.
But again there is no simple tool of prevention!!!
P.S. Please pray for the Lithuanian people & the other countries who are "pioneers" in suicide!!!!
